Denver and Us

Caring for pets and animals in and around us is one of the simplest way to teach nurturance,

responsibility and instil empathy in children.  Over time, they learn respect for all life forms and to live in harmony.

Meet Denver’s grandson. 7 years back when we moved into this house, we inherited Denver and his family (bright blue little eggs). Since then, the youngest of the crow family eats with us, three nibbles a day. At sharp 7:45 am, 1 pm and early dinner 5:45pm.

Observations:

- I have come to understand that city crows understand English. This young fellow was reprimanded for screaming his lungs out and bursting my ears. After a sharp telling off, he now waits patiently without a single ‘Caaw’.

- He knows that he’s a reluctant pet but still demands to be fed exactly what you are eating. You cannot eat a slice of mango and give him watermelon. He simply won’t touch it.

- He knows he’s safe and often eats from our hands with ease.

- He saves the yummy stuff in the plants for a later snack.

- He has an impeccable sense of time, and will not allow you to over sleep even on a Sunday!

He knocks at the window till you open it and serve some breakfast. He even knocks at the bathroom window if the ac is on or windows are shut. (zero privacy!)

- Some times brings in his friends and insists on second helping.

So in a nutshell, we are used to having them around. Most times, it’s love and sometimes rolling of the eyes at both ends.

This summer my son was taking pictures in the garden oblivious to the fact that there was a large kite looming over his head. Just as the kite swooped down closer, the crows in the garden went crazy and cawed loudly creating a ruckus enough for him to look up. They flew in closer and took a dig at the kite warning him to back off.

The kite understood and flew off, he was only trying to fetch some twigs and got some at the other end of the garden. I saw this from a distance, smiling and marvelling how they too have our back. The crows raised an alarm just as they would for their young ones!

Uff.. absolute love, in its purest form.
